Not to be confused with a Forest in another region in Italy (Umbria) this National Park, Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997 has a surface of almost 10.500 hectares and covers the North-east side of Gargano and, from 832 metres above sea level of MonteIacotenente, goes down to 165 metres above sea level in the area of Caritate. It includes areas related to different municipalities, Vico del Gargano, Vieste and Monte Sant'Angelo. Visitors can get more information, maps and tips at the visitors center. How and when it is possible to visit the Park: the information office of the Park Authority and the Visitor Centers hand out publications informing the visitors about the characteristics of the places and the best periods to visit the Park. How to get there and connections: by car, if you want to reach the coastal lakes and the northern slopes, follow the A14 Bologna-Taranto motorway and take Poggio Imperiale exit; then you can follow the Gargano highway until you reach Vico, then Peschici, Vieste, and Foresta Umbra; take San Severo exit and the SS road 272 towards San Marco in Lamis, San Giovanni Rotondo. From Foggia you must take the Gargano SS road 89 towards Manfredonia, Mattinata, Monte Sant'Angelo, while the easiest way to get there from the South is to take the Cerignola est exit on the A14 motorway and to go on towards Gargano. For those who arrive from Naples following the A16 motorway it is better to take Candela exit to get to the highway towards Foggia. For those who prefer to travel by train, there are the FS trains until San Severo and Foggia, and a pictoresque local line of the Gargano railways which links San Severo to Peschici Calenella going through almost the whole hinterland of the Park (for further information, Tel. +39 0882 221414). Buses of the SITA line and of the Gargano railways link the villages of the Park with San Giovanni Rotondo, Manfredonia, and Foggia.

Laying on a little island called Isola Santa Eufemia this is an active lighthouse located between the rocks of Santa Croce and San Francesco, just opposite the town of Vieste. Its position is still strategic to be more visible from the seaside. The tower is unpainted is 27 metres (89 ft) high; the lantern is positioned at a height of 40 metres (130 ft) above sea level. Once operated manually by the guardian, it is now operated by the Lighthouses Service of Marina Militare. The light emits three white flashes in a fifteen seconds period, and it is visible up to 25 nautical miles (46 km; 29 mi). One of the symbols of the Town, that tourists are unfortunately not allowed to visit.

The coast of Gargano is particularly suitable for a bike ride. Wonderful are the ups and downs on the coast road from Peschici to Mattinata, the climbs towards Monte Sant’Angelo and the Umbra Forest, and there are also long straight paths such as the one between Calenella and the lakes of Lesina and Varano. A cycling holiday may follow the Grande Circuito del Gargano, a rollercoaster for a total of 200 km and 3000 meters in altitude, with nothing to envy to the more famous Amalfi and Sorrento coast. The ring to the south, starting from the center of Vieste, follows the coast road that passes through Baia delle Zagare and the architiello of San Felice, real natural monuments. The ring to the north, also starting from Vieste, crosses the trabucchi coast to Peschici and passes in the shadow of the Pineta Marzini, to become flat from San Menaio to Lido del Sole except for a short climb in the village of Rodi Garganico. The return uphill touches the villages of Ischitella and Vico del Gargano, where the hairpin bends for the Umbra Forest begin over 800 meters high. Final downhill along the Mandrione road surrounded by beech and oak trees. Guaranteed air conditioning effect due to the stunning, majestic trees.

The coast of Gargano is ideal to be lived on a sailing boat or windsurf and kitesurf, as its main windy are strong northern and powerful. Jump on board and sail towards the sunset in a magic atmosphere.

A whole system of watchtowers along the entire length of the Apulian seashore dates back to the 16th century. The towers were built in strategic positions along the coast to protect citizens from invasions. They were close enough so that each tower could communicate with the towers on either side of it.

Taking a stroll in the Old Town of Vieste. Recently redecorated with flowers and plants, the Old Town of Vieste tells the history of this medieval little rocky village. As people call it here, “Vieste Vecchia” lays on a cliff above the sea, above a beach called "Castle’s beach" and leading to the location of “Marina Piccola”. The medieval village has been restored all over the years but it has kept alla its original features: the typical alleys, small squares and panoramic view spots overlooking the sea, terraced houses with small balconies and joined above the streets by distinctive archways.
